My work featured in The Arizona Republic

11 11 2007

Some of the work done by myself and surfacestations.org volunteer, Warren Meyer, was featured in an article today in “The Arizona Republic” titled Skeptics raise doubts on global warming.

They missed a great chance though to publish the photo of the University of Arizona, Tucson, USHCN climate station of record sited in the middle of a parking lot, even though I gave photo permission.

Taurid Meteors tonight

11 11 2007

Remember this one on video? The Jackson Lake Fireball of 1972

Since we’ll have a clear evening here in Northern California, I thought I’d mention this.

The annual Northern Taurid meteor shower caused by Comet Encke is underway. Although Taurid meteor rates are normally low, only about five meteors per hour, those five can be doozies. The shower is a well-known producer of terrestrial fireballs and lunar explosions. Taurids can appear at any hour of the night, so be alert for meteors tinight

Where to look? See the sky map.

California nearing completion for USHCN surveys. There are a number of surveys in the que that will soon be online, bringing California’s USHCN network to within half a dozen (or less) remaining to be completed. Watch for an update soon.

B44 forms - Thanks to former California State Climatologist Jim Goodridge, we now have every B44 station form for every COOP (including USHCN) station for California. This has been key in completing many surveys. All original B44 paper forms have been scanned into PDF files. Only those that don’t reveal currently valid private info will be posted. See a sample here for Eureka’s USHCN station and here for San Jacinto’s COOP station.
