New milestone at Surfacestations.org - 309 !

Today, I registered the 309th volunteer observer, Geoff Sherrington,  and over the weekend, we passed the 300 mark of registrants.

A couple of people have written in, some worried, that I have not “updated” the main web page of surfacestations.org recently. Dr. Roger Pielke was one of them. Here’s my response:

Hi Roger,

Not to worry. I just took a breather. As you know, dealing with all the input on the net and managing such a large project can be very draining and time consuming.

Unlike many who work in science, I still have to worry about where my next paycheck comes from since I run my own business. I had been spending so much time on surfacestations.org that my employees were nearing mutiny because things that I needed to do at work had been left undone.

People whom have tenured science positions can work 100% on the latest project they have, I cannot. My business sales and personal life has taken a hit because I put so much work to this project this summer, and I’m trying to find a balance now. So, I dialed it back at bit. I did update my blog to reach more people, which you can see here at www.wattsupwiththat.com

The good news is that the surfacestations.org website has in fact continued to be updated by volunteers with new surveys. This goes on without any input from me. What does require my input though, is qc checks, rating and collation in the Excel spreadsheet that I publish. That will be updated shortly.
